Wales has long been known as the Land of Song and we aren’t disputing that for a second. However there’s another side to this country that is growing by the day and that is the Welsh rap scene. Although rap has been here in Wales for decades and has given us chart topping and globally respected artists across each generation, we feel that right now is the most exciting time it’s ever been.
Who are we? For the most part this Substack will be headed up by two people.
Kaptin Barrett
Currently Hip-hop Coordinator at the national museum, Amgueddfa Cymru. Kaptin is curating an exhibition about Hip-hop and has been archiving a lot of oral history around the subject. In many previous lives he has been a rapper, a promoter, an artist manager for Astroid Boys, radio host, blogger, writer, DJ and youth worker. He was also Head of Music at Boomtown festival for 10 years. He has been involved with Welsh rap music since 1990 and has watched it go through many changes. Kaptin is based in Cardiff.
Dave Acton
As well as being a rapper himself, Dave heads up Larynx Entertainment, a multimedia platform for Welsh MOBO artists which has been the primary source of knowledge for the scene since 2018. There’s very little that happens in this country without Dave knowing about it and you should totally follow Larynx Entertainment on all socials, even though we will be trying to summarise everything that’s going on here each week. He’s also an event promoter and artist manager. Dave is based in Wrexham.
This Substack will include a weekly newsletter with music releases, upcoming events and news from the scene. If you want to let us know about anything happening then email: thelarynxofficial@gmail.com and landofrapcymru@gmail.com
We want to help keep the scene connected and also represent across the generations with posts about the history of rap within Wales, deep dives and interviews. We also want to shine a light on all of the talent here as far and wide as we can. Please subscribe and help us to spread the word out.
What a great idea, looking forward to seeing how this progresses.
